tfl1Last week’s devastating tornado in Oklahoma almost cost one truck driver his life.

Johnson County Oklahoma, trucking company owner, Chris Blair, said he was concerned that one of his drivers could be headed into a tornado Sunday outside Shawnee, Okla.

According to Blair, he tried a dozen times to reach Steve Everett’s cellphone, but there was no answer. Before long, a GPS tracking device on Everett’s truck alerted Blair that something had gone “horribly wrong” with the tractor trailer that Everett, who is from Lexington, was driving west on Interstate 40.

Everett had stopped on an overpass, with the intention of getting out of the vehicle and finding a safe spot, said Blair, co-owner of Blair Transport Inc.

Before he could get out of the vehicle, the wind picked the truck up and blew it off the overpass, blew it … off the bridge and it fell 50 or 75 feet below. There was another road below it and it fell on that road.

As of last Wednesday, Everett was in critical condition, according to Oklahoma University Medical Center spokesman Dennis Gimmel . The 44 year old trucker suffered injuries to his collarbone and spine, his wife, Crystal Everett, said Wednesday from the hospital. According to Mrs. Everett, her husband underwent surgery Tuesday, and she was waiting to get more information about the extent of the injuries to his spine.

She asked that people “keep us in their prayers.”

Blair said that initially, he had no idea that Everett was one of the hundreds of people injured earlier this week by the tornadoes. At least 24 deaths are blamed on the twisters that hit Oklahoma..

“We knew something was wrong,” because the tracking device was showing the truck going in a direction “it shouldn’t have been going in” he said.

Blair said he found out about the accident when another one of his company’s drivers came upon it about two hours later.

By that time, he said, Everett, who had been hauling a load of plastic cups from a Bowling Green factory to Los Angeles, was on his way to a hospital.

trucking88Last week,  Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam was in Indianapolis speaking at a transportation seminar. This was his first public question and answer session since the FBI raided company headquarters April 15. Haslam answered predetermined questions asked by former Kansas governor and American Trucking Associations president Bill Graves.

According to him, he was “absolutely not” aware of and did not participate in the practices that led to the federal investigation into his Pilot Flying J company.

I take responsibility for what happens at PFJ as the guy at the top of the shop, but I was absolutely not aware of any of this. As soon as we found out there was an issue, we immediately began taking an aggressive stance in finding out what happened, No. 1, and righting the ship, No. 2.

At the seminar, Haslam attempted to regain the trust of the transportation industry and his customers, by detailing a five-point plan to correct the situation. Haslam estimated in an initial internal review that 5% of Pilot Flying J trucking customers with a contract that includes rebates or discounts had a manual adjustment “to the benefit of our company and to the detriment of the trucking company.”

Federal investigators allege that Pilot, a truck-stop chain that is the nation’s largest diesel fuel retailer, deliberately withheld rebates from trucking companies to boost profits. The owner, who bought the team last year, met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in April. The league has not announced any disciplinary actions.

trucking86Last Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, D-N.J., once again introduced legislation designed to keep bigger, heavier trucks off the road.

The bill would apply existing federal truck size and weight limits to the entire National Highway System (NHS).

As of now, these restrictions apply only to interstate highways.

According to the Senator, applying the size and weight limits more broadly would improve safety and prevent excessive strain on the nation’s roads, tunnels and bridges.

Lautenberg’s bill has been named the “Safe Highways and Infrastructure Preservation Act of 2013” (SHIPA). It would apply the current limits of 80,000 pounds and maximum length of 53 feet for tractor-trailers to the entire NHS, but would  still allow certain exemptions, including firefighting equipment.

The NHS includes both interstate highways and smaller national highways.

While most truck size and weight restrictions already apply to the 44,000-mile Interstate Highway System, Lautenberg’s bill would extend certain restrictions to the much bigger 220,000-mile NHS.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to hire the best, to make sure that your business gets to market.

trucking84Good News!

The Trucking Industry added 11,700 jobs in April after losing 6,300 in March.

According to Labor Department statistics, in the past three years, the industry has added 147,600 jobs,.

Bob Costello, chief economist at the American Trucking Associations, said.

We don’t know what types of jobs (the April gain) they are, but since the majority of trucking employment is drivers, it would suggest that category. The gain since April 2010 is significant. Looking backward, in 2012, trucking employment grew at twice the rate as total U.S. employment.

John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo, adds,

This is a good report. There’s a lot of strength… It’s good for the economy. It’s good for people’s income.

According to Silvia, the stronger job growth suggests that the federal budget cutting “does not mean recession. It does not mean a dramatic slowdown.”

Last Friday, the Labor Department increased its estimate of job gains in February and March by a combined 114,000. It now says employers added 332,000 jobs in February and 138,000 in March. The economy has created an average of 208,000 jobs a month from November through April — above the 138,000 added in the previous six months.
